The miniature series in full

Miniature bearings are the small end of the deep groove family, in two metric miniature series — 623 to 629 and 604 to 609 — together with the 608 family that small-equipment buyers know on sight, and instrument items such as the MR52ZZ. Miniature sizes are ordered by code, in quantity, against a drawing of a small assembly, and they stand as a line of their own rather than as the tail of the 6000 series.

Flanged miniatures locate the bearing

A flanged miniature carries a lip on the outer ring that locates the bearing against a housing face, which removes a circlip or a shoulder from a small assembly. The flanged types in this range sit inside the F-series — F6000, F6200, F6800 and F6900 — and the miniature end of those series is where flange location is most often specified, because small housings have the least room for separate locating parts. The flanged bearing comparison sorts flanged bearings from flange units, which are a different answer to a similar word.

Closures and clearances at small sizes

The family option frame applies at miniature sizes as well: open, ZZ shielded or 2RS sealed, clearance C0, C2 or C3 or customised, in chrome steel or stainless steel. At these sizes the closure choice is often the specification — an open miniature in a clean instrument, a shielded one in a small motor, a sealed one where the assembly is washed or handled. Stainless miniatures are ordered from the stainless line at the same codes where the duty is wet.

Specifying miniature bearings

A miniature inquiry is a code list: the full bearing code carries the series, the bore and the closure, and quantities at miniature sizes are usually counted in the hundreds or thousands rather than in pieces. State the code exactly as drawn, the closure and material next to it, and the quantity per code. Where the drawing shows a flanged type, say so in words as well as in the code — the F prefix is the easiest character on the page to lose in a copied list.

Miniature orders often arrive as part of a larger instrument build, mixed with standard sizes on one list. Keep the miniature lines grouped together on the list and marked as miniature: they are picked, checked and packed as small parts, and grouping them keeps a small bearing from being handled like a standard one.
