Combined loads: radial and axial together

A deep groove bearing centres its contact on the radial line; an angular contact bearing offsets the raceway contact so one bearing carries radial and axial load at the same time. That is the position this family is built for: spindles, pumps and geared shafts where thrust arrives with the radial load and a separate thrust bearing would complicate the seating. The company positions the family on combined load capacity and on high-speed performance for demanding rotating applications, which is where angular contact is normally specified.

The P4 grade in the family name

Precision grades in this range run P0, P6, P5 and P4 across the steel families, and the angular contact family is the one carried at P4 — the tightest grade in the frame. That makes the family the natural first check for machine-tool and spindle-adjacent positions in this range, and it is also why the inquiry should state the grade rather than leave it to be assumed: a P4 item and a standard-grade item are different deliveries against the same nominal size.

Where angular contact sits in the range

Buyers usually arrive here from one of two directions: from the steel ball bearing family, when a deep groove position starts carrying thrust it was not seated for, or from the custom bearing line, when the size is standard but the grade is not. If the load is purely radial, the deep groove family is the simpler answer; if it is purely axial, the thrust ball bearing page is. Angular contact is the answer when both arrive together and the seating must stay one bearing wide.
